Pregnancy Insurance Information

I am pregnant—or I think I may be pregnant—and I do not have health insurance.  What should I do?

If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, seek care immediately. Please search for a clinic near you here by searching “prenatal”.  When calling the clinic to seek care, tell the person on the phone that are pregnant or think you may be pregnant.

How do I pay for these services?

There are a number of health insurance programs that cover pregnant women.  These programs differ based on your income, citizenship.  Clinics will enroll you in the appropriate program.

What are these programs? Where can I learn about them?

Presumptive Eligibility Medi-Cal

Low-income pregnant women can get immediate, temporary coverage for pregnancy tests, prenatal care, and abortion .  This Medi-Cal program is called Presumptive Eligibility (PE) and is available at several clinics and doctor offices across Alameda County. PE will cover the cost of these services while the County is processing a woman’s Medi-Cal application.

Who is Eligible?

Any woman who thinks she is pregnant, whose family income is under a certain amount, and who seeks prenatal care through a participating Medi-Cal provider. Undocumented women are eligible.

What is the cost?

Prenatal care services under PE are free to eligible women.

Pregnancy-only Medi-Cal

A pregnant woman who does not qualify for full-scope Medi-Cal may be eligible for a Medi-Cal benefit that is restricted to prenatal care, labor and delivery services, family planning services, and postpartum care that lasts for at least 60 days following the end of pregnancy.

Who is Eligible?

Pregnant women, including undocumented women, with family income at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level.

Cost?

Pregnancy-only Medi-Cal services are free to eligible women.

Access for Infants & Mothers (AIM)

AIM is a state program that provides health insurance for middle-income pregnant women.

Who is Eligible?
  • Women who are not more than 30 weeks pregnant at application date,
  • California Resident
  • do not have no-cost Medi-Cal or Medicare
  • do not have insurance coverage for pregnancy or have deductibles/ co-payments for maternity over $500 and
  • have monthly household income within guidelines of the program
Cost?

1.5% of adjusted household income after income deductions.
